Friday's Fancies #39: Outfit Crush

It's that once a season time: Outfit Crush time.
You know how this goes.
Shall we?
I saw this outfit on happily grey and thought it'd be perfect for an outfit inspiration this time around.
Here's the breakdown:

Let's start out with the most simple part of this outfit: the earrings. I wear basic studs every day. I'd rather have other fun accessories steal the spotlight, and these Michael Kors studs are exactly perfect. (and surprisingly cheap for MK. nice.)

I'm pretty sure this 1969 Western Dress from Gap is the perfect summer to fall piece. Besides the fact that the dark denim look goes with basically any color accessory, it's under $70. Oh yes please.

This coral scarf from ModCloth is light and lovely and will go perfectly with that dang cute dress mentioned above.

I. Need. This. Wallet. Please. My birthday is like....5 months away. Buy this Kate Spade beauty for me now please? Early gift?

Let's continue with the Kate Spade train and take a moment to enjoy this stunning watch, okay?

I'm pretty sure this tote from Gap can hold anything and everything. Including that wallet. Just saying.

What piece would you steal from this outfit?
I think I've made my choice pretty clear...

HERRINGBONE AND CHEESEBOARDS

I don't think I need to sell anyone on Target. That's not what this post is about. If anything, it's just an opportunity for me to share my target obsession and gawk at some of my current favorite things while I type this.

If you read nothing else, read this: Online Target is doing "Spend $75, get $15". Yeah. You're welcome.

I don't know if you've been in Target in the last few weeks but they are REALLY nailing it right now. Not saying they've ever been off the ball, but between a few of their collections and The Shops they have featured...it's beyond impressive. We have a Target about a minute from our apartment, and last night as we were walking through, I found the following items, and totally lost it. I purchased the herringbone magazine tote and it is sleek and warm and sophisticated all at the same time!

Let's talk pillows. These geometric pillows are kind of the perfect pop of color, right?

These little dishes are the perfect fall & holiday gift, I'm convinced of it. These little deer/owl/fox/woodpecker buddies need a home! Go get them!

These wood side tables are rustic meets industrial and if we had the space for them two would be mine. Sigh. Target, please sell these again in a year when we're in a bigger place!

I'm going to go grab this USA cutting/cheeseboard today after work. Clearly I have no willpower...but PEOPLE. It's a USA cutting board! You get to be patriotic while cooking! What else could you want?!!?

Woodpecker lamp. I don't feel I need to justify this one. Done.

All the breath I saved on the lamp I'll use on this herringbone storage tote. I took the large version of this home with me, and it is perfect for stowing all my magazine and catalogs in. It's already sold out online so RUN to your nearest Target and grab one!!

Finally, these little notebooks just make me smile. Super cheap, super sweet. Perfect "just because" gift for a friend!

Which of these items would you take home with you?
If you feel like sending any my way, let me know!

HIBISCUS DAYS JEWELRY

You all know I love Etsy.
If you're new to the blog: Hi, I love Etsy.

A looooong while back I had won a giveaway to a lovely Etsy shop called Hibiscus Days, and ended up becoming friends with the shop owner, Jodie. We've kept in touch, and she is here today offering $25 to her shop for one of you lucky, lucky flannel loving followers.
Jodie lives in Hawaii, and makes jewelry that is simple, pure, and beautiful. On top of that, everything is completely affordable while still being great quality. Although you all know I'm a fan of big, flashy jewelry for fun occasions, my usual day-to-day is a good layering of some simple gold or silver pendants (including the tiny gold locket I won back then).

Here's a few of my favorite Hibiscus Days pieces, just to get your mind going for what you can get if you win!

Now, all you pretty people need to do is enter below using Rafflecopter!

Good luck! Winner will be announced next week!

CRISPY GARLIC KALE CHIPS

Is the kale chip fad over?
Maybe.
Does that mean people should stop making kale chips?
No.

Even though I eat pretty healthy being a vegetarian, a lot of my recipes on the blog aren't so healthy (i.e chewy butter caramels, gnocchi mac & cheese, and peanut butter eggs). Thus, enjoy this healthy recipe to balance things out. (I think it's even Paleo-friendly!)

What you'll need to make it happen:
1 head kale
2 tablespoons olive oil
3 cloves garlic (kept whole)
black pepper & sea salt for seasoning.

How to make it happen:
Step 1: Wash your kale and dry thoroughly. Soggy kale leads to soggy chips.
Step 2: Toss your kale and garlic in a large bowl with the olive oil until completely coated.
Step 3: Rip apart your kale into large chip pieces (they'll shrink up in the oven) and try to space as evenly as you can on a tin foil lined baking sheet. Make sure a clove of garlic is in the middle and each side of the pan. Sprinkle everything with sea salt and pepper. You won't need much, especially since the garlic will depart a lot of flavor into the kale!
Step 4: Bake at 275 for 10 minutes, then flip the chips and bake for another 10. Now, I'm paranoid about burning stuff, so I checked every few minutes after 15 to make sure they weren't turning black. You'll know they're done when they've turned dark greeny-brown and are crisp.
Step 5: Remove your garlic cloves and toss out. Let your chips cool, and enjoy!

Now, I won't lie to you...I didn't totally love the first kale chip I had. For that matter, I didn't like the first few. Then I started to realize they were kiiiind of delicious.
They're addicting people, watch out.

Are you a kale chip fan?
Try these. You might convert to being one!

STRIPE INTERVENTION

Oh hiiiiiiiiiiiii friends.
Yes, all of those "i"s were necessary.
It's 9:45 on Sunday and I'm writing this post as Michael and I watch football and eat copious amounts of white cheddar popcorn. Have I told you how much popcorn I consume? I probably shouldn't, you'd judge me.

Nothing too crazy happened this weekend for me, other than coffee, crosswords, and fall shopping. Wild, I know.  One bright spot was seeing my pretty friend Carly from A Simple Affair. Do you all know her already? If not, go say hi to her. She's nice, I promise.

--------------------------
Evidently this was my least creative week of dressing ever. How did I not realize I wore stripes 3 out of 5 days at work? This is why I will never be a personal stylist like Carly. I'd go through your closet and yell "STRIPES! YOU NEED MORE STRIPES!!!!!!!!!"
Like stripes too?
top left: forever 21 // top right: gap (get it on sale here) // bottom left: j.crew (get it on sale here

Tomorrow I'll be sharing my wildly exciting recipe for garlic kale chips. They are probably the least appetizing thing I've ever made. But also : the healthiest?

I've been on a magazine kick lately. I know nowadays you can find anything free online, but there is something so great about collecting magazines. PLUS I think giving year subscriptions to people as a gift is a thoughtful (and year-round!) present.
I love getting home from work and seeing something in the mailbox, don't you? Between Groupon and Living Social I've signed up for a few subscriptions, and Right now Living Social has a deal for 1 year of Martha Stewart AND Everyday Food for $19 total. That is FREAKING ridiculous. I may have bought them for myself and others. HELLO holiday shopping done early! There's still a few days left to get this deal, check it out HERE.
(photo via Living Social)

Wait, wait, wait. Let's just say hypothetically I was going to get another striped top, (which I won't because then I know someone will need to hold an intervention) this would be it. Perfect. All of it.
(photo via Madewell)

This scarf makes me oh so happy. Yellow and zebras, what more could you want? Oh, please ignore the fact I look slightly blue. I blame Instagram.  Oh, and the scarf? It's from a random online shop.  find a similar one here.

What was your weekend like?
Buy any striped tops? (kiddingbutseriously).

Friday's Fancies #38: Team Time

This week is all about football, which makes me a very happy lady.

I love love love love love me some Green Bay Packers.
Now, I am really superstitious, and I wear the same Donald Driver jersey for EVERY game. Every time I've tried to mix it up and wear a different one, the Packers lose (shaking my fist at you, NYGiants).

Anyway, if I wasn't a superstitious, jersey wearing goon, these are a few things I'd consider going for to show my support for the Pack:

--------------
P.S. How cute are these team shirts from Old Navy? They don't have any GB ones, but they do have about 20 teams! Check 'em out!

Which team do you root for?
GO PACK GO!!

#OOTD OVERLOAD

You all know I'm an Instagram fan.

I thinks it's funny on Twitter when I see people complaing/teasing other people about what they take pictures of on Instagram
"Ohmygosh SHE is SO lame! She needs to STOP taking pictures of her cat/dog/baby/glass of wine/cup of coffee/magazine/manicure/brunch/LV bag/sunset/etc"

Here's a tip people: If you are annoyed by someone's pictures, stop following them!
Same goes with blogs. Stop being a butthead ripping on other people and find blogs you do like the content of. No one is forcing you to check said blogs everyday (or said Instagram accounts). You're an adult, figure it out.

End rant.

Anyway: I don't have a cat/dog/baby. I don't like getting my nails done. I don't own anything LV, and I rarely brunch (sadly). Thus, the only pattern you can really find is outfit pictures.
Is it wild and creative and artsy and mind blowing? Nope. But it's my Instagram account, so lay off.
(You can make collages like this on Printsgram)

I may be lame, but I think they're kind of pretty all together.

What's your Instagram jam?

A NOTE ON THE MIDWEST

Yesterday was one of those days at work.
I don't feel the need to go into details, because I'm guessing pretty much everyone out there just knows what it means when you say "one of those days".

Back in January when I made my resolutions for the New Year, my number one focus was to complain less. Sometimes I feel like heavy sarcasm makes a quick slide to complainy, and no one likes a negative Nancy, right? Thus, when I had a bummer day yesterday- I really tried to not let it ruin my night. Other than the fact that Michael happens to have quite the talent for making me feel better (and letting me vent), what calmed me as I left was my drive home.

If you're not from the Midwest, or have never visited, you might underestimate its beauty.
We are more than just flat land and a lot of snow, people!

My drive to work is a little over 40 minutes. The reason it's so beautiful is because I don't spend a second of it in stop & go traffic. I'm never bumper to bumper or surrounded by concrete. I drive through the Wisconsin countryside, through green hills and blue skies and yellow cornfields. Even the days when it's cloudy everything is just a richer, stronger hue.

Driving down the winding road listening to music is ridiculously comforting, especially when this is what you see:

(For the record, I didn't take these pictures WHILE driving. I'm not an idiot. I took them while Michael drove. Fact.)

So there you have it. Less than awesome day at work gets you a blog post on some Wisconsin Instagram pictures.
Magic.

What do you love about the place you live?
Or, on the topic I started with: how do you handle a bad day at work?

ZUCCHINI LATKES (WITH CAYENNE PAPRIKA TOPPING)

Have you ever had latkes before?
Traditionally they're made with potatoes, but after getting the most gigantic zucchini ever the other week, I knew it was time to try them with zucchini!
Well, to be fair I've never tried to make latkes at all. I leave that up to my mom. She makes them like a champ ONCE a year. Yeah. ONCE. The whole house smells like heaven and all of us eat until we're sick.
So, I bring you:

What you'll need to make it happen (makes 6 latkes):
2 cups zucchini, thickly grated
1/2 small onion, thickly grated
1 egg
1/8 tsp black pepper
1/8 teaspoon sea salt (more to taste if needed)
1/4 cup flour
vegetable oil for frying
---
Topping:
1/3 cup light sour cream
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon cayenne
(all mixed together and chilled)

How to make it happen:
Step 1: Mix your salt with your zucchini in a bowl and let sit for a few minutes.
Step 2: Squeeze as much water as humanly possible from your zucchini using a paper towel. Zucchini has a pretty high water content, and clearly it they haven't been squeeze out they'll make the latkes soggy!
Step 3: Mix your zucchini with the grated onion, black pepper, egg and flour. Your batter should kind of resemble a pancake batter with grated zucchini.
Step 4: Heat your oil in a skillet (or wok, whatever you have) on medium heat, and once it's hot drop 1/4 cup batter into the center of the pan, pressing it all out to be thin in the pan.
Step 5: After a minute or so, when the first side is getting brown, flip it over and cook the next side out.
Step 6: Take out of oil and onto paper towel to get out excess oil. Top with sour cream mixture and enjoy!
The edges will be crispy crunchy with the center being nice and soft. The cool sour cream with a little bit of a kick goes perfectly with the hot latke!

I know fried things aren't healthy (which is why my mom makes them ONCE a year), but damn they're good.

Which of your mom's recipes do you try to recreate?
These definitely weren't as good as hers, but I'm trying!

NO SHAME.

How was your weekend, people?
My life is pretty great right now, because the Packers beat the Bears last week, and the Badgers won on Saturday (barely, but still).
------------
Here's what's up with me lately:

My sister Louisa and her boyfriend were in town this weekend, and we spent Saturday afternoon with our other sister Ann and my adorable niece Lyddie. Michael hid one of her toys, and the first thing she did was leap on his lap and grab his collar to look down his shirt. No shame, that girl. No shame.

I grabbed this beauty from J.Crew yesterday.  I loves me some burgundy & lavender. Besides the fact that it's crazy soft, it's on sale AND J.Crew is doing free shipping. Holla. Get yours here.

This week in outfits (yesthatispolkadotchambraythankyouverymuch):

Let's have a quick conversation about this bag. Remember last week when I was talking about my favorite fall bags? Well throw that out the window. Here is THE perfect one. And it comes in three colors. Anyone else care to validate my feelings, here?

Tomorrow I'll be sharing this recipe (zucchini latkes with paprika cayenne topping):

Per usual, thanks for hanging out with me as I ramble. You all are positively lovely.

Also: I feel like I haven't called it out in a while, but if you're on Instagram let me know what name you use!
(you can find me here. @lpodlich)

What did your weekend look like?
If it didn't include a cute niece looking down your boyfriend's shirt, it must've been a real bummer...

Friday's Fancies #37: The Ultimate Fall List.

Let's be real. If I made a list of all the things I wanted for fall this post would go on for miles.
I've narrowed it down to 12 fall must-haves....

1. Chunky Knits: This is by far #1 on my list. Comfy, cozy oversized knits are where it's at. This Dorothy Perkins Cardigan just needs to be mine to cuddle up in. Now.
2. Striped Tees. I have a sliiiiight stripe obsession, and soft, cotton, simple tees like this Modal Ramona one are a fall staple for layering.
3. A Tailored Blazer. I should clarify: multiple blazers. I have a few and I love love love them. This ponte blazer is insanely affordable, and is perfect to dress down with jeans or up over a dress!
4. Oversized Watch: It's time for a nice, big, investment watch that will wear season to season. This Michael Kors one is sleek and will go with any outfit.
5. Simple Bracelets: I'm not a huge arm-party girl, I'd rather have one or two simple, beautiful bracelets. You all know my love of Gorjana by now, right? Good. This triple wrap bracelet would go great with that watch...just sayin'!
6. Statement Necklaces: No, I won't go into some big monologue about big necklaces- shockingly enough. This sophisticated Juliet & Company black and gold necklace is perfect for work and going out on the town!
7. Riding Boots: Gah, Tory Burch, you're killing me with these babies. Riding boots over skinny jeans? Basically my fall uniform (oh, with a shirt too, I guess).
8. Colorful Bag: In fall I always wear a lot of neutrals, so having a fun pop of color like this Madewell Camden Satchel is a fun way to spice up an outfit.
9. Pattern Scarves: I justify these the same way I justify colorful bags. Neutrals need a pop, people! How stunning is this silk Mango scarf? I can think of multiple friends that may get this as a holiday gift...
10. Sleek Booties: Skirt + tights + black booties = happy Laura. (Love these Wallis ones)
11. Everyday Clutch: Claire Vivier always kills it, and I've had my eye on this brown, black, and white one for a while.
12. Basic Studs: Marc by Marc Jacobs earrings are always lovely, and  these are SO affordable, and wearable in every season. Raise your hand if you need these classic ID studs!

Which of these are you going to add to your fall wardrobe?
I think that bracelet is first on my list!

BAGS OF FALL

I'm so not fun or fancy when it comes to bags. I switch back and forth between two purses...sometimes throwing in a clutch if I'm feeling fancy. My day to day at work is actually a tote, so there- look at me mixing it up! Woo!
I've decided it's time to grow up and actually invest in a nice bag for fall. Here are a few that have caught my eye:

Now, some of these are wayyy out of my budget ::tear:: but the majority are really a great deal!

Row 4: Yellow ASOS Bucket Tote //  CSC Mobile Satchel in Yellow // Kate Spade Street Hadley

Which bag would you go for?
The practical girl in me says something in the brown or black family, but the less lame one says to go for the orange Kate Spade....

RECIPE:: CROWD PLEASING ZUCCHINI BREAD

So, remember here where I showed you the insanely gigantic zucchini we got at the farmer's market?
Well, as promised, I'll be sharing some recipes with you in the next few weeks from said veggie!
Today we'll start with my absolute favorite, zucchini bread:

Crunchy on the outside, soft and tender on the inside. Cinnamony sweet without being sugary. Mm-mmm.
Unfortunately I cannot take credit for this recipe, it was passed down to me by a coworker when I was in college (Thanks Jenny!). She doesn't have a blog/website to link the recipe to, so I'll be sharing it with you here today on her behalf.
Before I get ahead of myself, I've been trying to find a way to prove how huge this dang thing is. It's big enough to make 16 loaves of bread, at least. It's big enough that it's more than twice the size of your average water bottle:

Off track. Sorry. Here's the recipe (makes 2 loaves):

What you'll need:
2 bread pans
2 cups zucchini (thickly grated)
2 cups white sugar
2 cups flour
1 cup canola oil
3 eggs
3 tsp vanilla extract
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
3 tsp cinnamon

How to make it happen:
Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350 and grease your bread pans.
Step 2: Mix your flour, sugar, salt, cinnamon, baking soda, baking powder, and zucchini together in a large bowl. Mix well.
Step 3: Add in your oil, eggs, and vanilla extract, and mix thoroughly. I do this just with a spatula- no hand mixer needed!
Step 4: Pour mixture evenly between two pans and bake for 40 minutes. (Stab it with a toothpick and if it comes out clean, you're good to go)
Step 5: Let. The. Bread. Cool. Hi, can you take a minute to focus with me here? LET THE DANG BREAD COOL! I know, it will smell like cinnamon heaven in your kitchen, but if you don't let the bread set & cool it'll all fall apart. Promise. Thus, Let it sit for 20 minutes or so before going along the edge of the pan with a knife, and flipping the pan over to get the bread out.
 Slice it up!
Eat by itself or with some butter:
I'm sure it'd be great if you added nuts or raisins- but I'm a purist and like it just with zucchini!
This is a great recipe to bring into work because it pleases those who like sweets, as well as those who pretend they're eating healthy ;)

What's your go-to dish to bring to work?
Clearly you know mine now, so share!

xo, lp

psssssssst. I am going to be over at A Creative Day as part of Eileen's Everyday series, and I'm a liiiittle excited about it! Make sure you go check it out, and look around Eileen's amazing blog for a while :)

Hey!  I'm Rachel of [Rachel Coletta]. My favorite trend right now is the [contrasting collar] as seen in New York's Fall/Winter 2012 Fashion Week.  Many of these collars are actually accessories that easily tuck into sweaters and crewneck dresses - who wouldn't think that's cool!?  It's a simple way to make your outfit look a bit more polished, especially when the collar pops out with color. One of you insanely awesome readers will win a [gorgeous gray bubble necklace] from me!
